Project Description
The project involves the restoration of the Unesco site of Pompeii, in Campania, and is considered crucial for the survival of the city, after a series of collapses at the 44 ha site, which is situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

The Pompeii project includes:
• the consolidation of the structures of the archaeological site, starting with the areas ranked ‘high risk’ pursuant to the ‘archaeological risk map’;
• the construction of a water canalisation and drainage system in the nonexcavated State property area leaning over the ancient buildings;
• the implementation of the consolidation, restoration and enhancement works in line with the method of programmed preservation;
• the training of staff working on site for the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompeii.

Value
€105-million.

Duration
The project is expected to be completed by 2015.

Latest Developments
Work on the project began in February on two ancient Roman homes – the Criptoportico and the Casa dei Dioscuri.
