PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Australian government has allocated a further A$14.5-million to accelerate work on the former Rum Jungle mine, in the Northern Territory.

The project, which closed down in 1971, produced some 3 500 t of uranium oxide, 20 000 t of copper concentrate, as well as smaller quantities of nickel and lead.

To date, since 2009, the government has spent some A$8.3-million to ensure that the area is rehabilitated properly.

The Northern Territory’s Mines and Energy Minister, Willem Westra van Holthe said that the first stage in the rehabilitation programme developed the conceptual plan, and had been extremely successful.

“It is now time to move into Stage 2, which will provide detailed engineering design that would provide for Stage 3 - full rehabilitation of this legacy site.”

Westra van Holthe pointed out that the Rum Jungle project was the first large industrial enterprise undertaken in the Northern Territory, with the bulk of the capital spent in the state.

“The minerals and energy sectors are an important part of our economy, but industry must realise the community and government expects and demands the best possible environmental performance from the start of the operation through to post-closure of the site,” Westra van Holthe said.
