PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The federal government has launched a new growth centre at the Queensland University of Technology to assist the mining equipment, technology and services (Mets) sector reach the global resources sector.

Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Christopher Pyne said the growth centre, dubbed Mets Ignite, would ensure the Australian Mets sector received the support it needed to prosper in an increasingly competitive and globalised market.

“The resources sector’s continual drive to increase efficiency and productivity means there is a demand for improved equipment, technology and services,” he noted.

“The future prosperity of the Mets sector will depend on its ability to remain globally competitive and seize these global opportunities.”

The growth centre, established under the government’s A$225-million Industry Growth Centres initiative, is designed to boost Australian industry’s competitiveness, productivity and capacity to innovate.

The growth centres would set long-term strategies and priorities to boost the capability of their sectors, increase productivity and skills, create jobs, reduce red tape and engage internationally.

“The Mets growth centre, like the other growth centres, will unite business acumen with the intellectual rigour of scientists, researchers and universities,” Pyne said.

“Improving and encouraging the engagement between business and researchers will drive innovation across the sector and ensure it maintains its competitive edge.”
