Collective gold wage agreements have been thrown into disarray with the sidelines agreement struck by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and Sibanye Gold. The National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity and Uasa unions are feeling sore that the three-year deal they struck with Sibanye benefited AMCU fully – but then got second-guessed six months later in a remarkably quick kiss and make-up between Sibanye Gold CEO Neal Froneman and AMCU Joseph Mathunjwa. There seems a lot we all do not know about this extremely sudden change of heart, which turns the Chamber of Mines’ collective gold bargaining process very much on its head.
