GOLDEN DEADLOCK

2nd August 2013

The dispute that three unions participating in the gold wage talks signals the start of a structured, orderly mediation process. Both dispute declaration and mediation are legal provisions. Taking them up shows the on-going commitment of the National Union of Mineworkers Solidarity and UASA to the rule of law. The process comes under the umbrella of the statutory body, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration. Gold producers AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold, Evander Gold Mine, Sibanye Gold, Village main Reef and Rand Uranium are “very encouraged” at this point. What disappoints the Chamber of Mines chief negotiator Dr Elize Strydom is the prediction of strike action by some commentators. The dispute follows the rejection of a 5% pay increase.
