Gladstone steel plant project, Australia
Name and Location
Gladstone steel plant project (GSPP), Queensland, Australia.
Client
Boulder Steel.
Project Description
The GSPP comprises the construction of an integrated steelmaking plant at a site within the Aldoga precinct of the Gladstone State Development Area, in Queensland.
The plant will produce high-quality steel in slab and billet form for export from the approved Fisherman’s Landing port facility to overseas finishing plants.
The integrated steelmaking plant will be constructed in two stages.
Stage 1 will have a production capacity of 2.5-million tonnes a year of high-quality steel and will include the construction of the steel plant, the rail loop, the coal dump station and the conveyance system for deliveries of bulk coal to the plant site, the 17 km private haul road and the port facilities, including three berths and stockyards at Fisherman’s Landing.
Stage 2 will have a design capacity of five-million tonnes a year and will begin development once Stage 1 operations are fully commissioned.
Value
The estimated capital cost for Stage 1 of the GSPP is $2.677-billion, with a further investment of $1.764-billion for Stage 2.
Duration
The construction of the GSPP will begin once the necessary approvals have been received, with the first construction activities planned for 2013/14 and Stage 1 expected to be operational by 2016.
Stage 2 will begin soon after the completion of Stage 1, with full operating capacity expected by 2018.
Latest Developments
The project is a step closer to construction, with the environmental-impact statement approved by the Queensland government in May.
The company, however, continues to work on the federal approval.
