Name of the Project
Gibson Island ammonia facility green hydrogen project.

Location
Gibson Island, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL).

Project Description
The project entails the conversion of IPL’s Gibson Island ammonia facility to run on green hydrogen.

Feasibility studies have confirmed that the proposed project could result in the construction of an estimated 500 MW hydrogen electrolysis facility at the site to produce green hydrogen, as well as the retrofitting of IPL’s existing ammonia manufacturing facility to run on the green hydrogen produced on site.

Operating on green hydrogen could, ultimately, lead to the facility’s producing up to 400 000 t/y of green ammonia, which can be exported to international markets and used in fertiliser, or help to decarbonise local industry through its potential use as a low-carbon fuel source for ports, airports and heavy transport.

Potential Job Creation
About 100 jobs will be supported across the project in the lead-up to the final investment decision.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision is targeted for 2023, with first production, subject to the final investment decision, expected in about 2025.

Latest Developments
FFI and IPL have elected to start front-end engineering design (FEED) and the execution of framework agreement to govern the project to a final investment decision.

The FEED will confirm the technical specifications and cost of the project, and underpin procurement.

The FEED phase is expected to cost about $38-million, with the federal government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, contributing $13.7-million.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
