Project Description
The Genesee generating station comprises three power generation units that provide more than 1 300 MW of baseload generation.

Genesee 1 and 2 are being repowered to natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) generation units.

The repowering project involves installing new gas-fired combustion turbines and heat-recovery steam generators while using the existing steam turbine generators. The two repowered units will provide an additional 538 MW of net capacity totalling 1 338 MW.

The repowered assets will use hydrogen-ready NGCC technology and are expected to set a new standard for gas generation efficiency in Canada.

Further, Capital Power aims to apply carbon capture and storage at the repowered Genesee 1 and 2 units. About three-million tonnes of carbon dioxide are expected to be captured a year.

The project also includes 210 MW of battery storage to enable the repowered units to operate up to their baseload capacity in accordance with the Alberta Electric System Operator most severe single contingency limit.

Genesee 3 – one of the most advanced, fuel efficient and environmentally progressive coal-fired units in Canada – is undergoing a dual-fuel transition and will be 100% natural gas-fuelled in 2023.
