The GFIP is a long-term freeway upgrade and expansion project, which entails the upgrade and construction of about 561 km of freeways in Gauteng.

Value
The Department of Transport (DoT), through Sanral, has invested more than R21-billion in the first phase of the project.

The project is substantially complete.

Latest Developments
Consultations about the socioeconomic impact of the controversial e-tolls imposed on some highways in Gauteng are set to get under way this month.

Labour, business, civil society, information and knowledge institutions and transport organisations will present their findings from August 26 to September 9. Public meetings will then be held in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and on the West Rand.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature will publish the details of the public meetings and a call for written submissions on August 31.

By early October 2014, the panel plans to meet with political parties represented in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

The final report and recommendations concerning the socioeconomic impact will be presented to Gauteng Premier David Makhura by the end of November.

On Budget and on Time?
E-tolling was suspended on April 28, 2012, pending a full review; however, the Constitutional Court has set aside the interdict preventing Sanral from tolling some of Gauteng’s highways, while the proposed e-tolling system is undergoing judicial review in the North Gauteng High Court, in Pretoria.
