Name of the Project
Fuel cell manufacturing facility.

Location
Gauteng, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Hydrogen fuel cell developer Mitochondria Energy Company.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing facility in the Vaal Special Economic Zone forming part of the wider Hydrogen Valley development concept.

The aim is to develop manufacturing capacity to build units totalling 250 MW/y, with plans to eventually ramp up to 1 000 MW/y, depending on demand.

Phase 2 is a far-reaching augmentation project entailing the local manufacture of fuel cell stacks.

The third phase being contemplated involves the production of electrolysers, with the vision of having electrolysers on site with fuel cells.

Potential Job Creation
The proposed facility will employ 400 people, while 800 will be employed if and when the company reaches the 1 000 MW/y capacity.

Capital Expenditure
Phase 1 is estimated at R1-billion. Funders of the first phase include South Africa’s State-owned Industrial Development Corporation and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, as well as Mitochondria.

Phase 2 is estimated at R3-billion. Discussion is underway with potential funders of the second phase.

Planned Start/End Date
Sod turning is expected in 2023, with the first fuel cells being produced in 2024, and full-scale commercialisation expected in 2028.
