Four men arrested for copper theft at Transnet
Four men, including a security guard, were arrested for allegedly stealing copper cable at Transnet's warehouse in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.
The men, aged between 23 and 45, were allegedly caught stealing two 500 m spools of copper cable on Sunday, spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.
Three of the men threatened the security guards with a 9 mm pistol and robbed them of a firearm before locking them in a toilet inside the warehouse, Kgasago said.
"The police followed up on information of this planned robbery obtained on Friday... from a reliable source," he said.
The men were caught as they were loading the second spool of the copper cable onto their truck.
"The value of each 500 m roll is estimated at R170 000," Kgasago said.
One of the security guards at the Transnet Driehoek warehouse was also arrested for allegedly planning the robbery.
A blue Mercedes-Benz truck, a pump-action shotgun and a 9 mm pistol were also seized.
All four men were charged with armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as malicious damage to property.
They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
