Fortescue takes control of ore processing at Christmas Creek
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has taken over the management and supervision of its two ore processing facilities at the Christmas Creek mine, in the Pilbara, following a fatality in August this year.
The fatality at Christmas Creek mine, which is primarily a contractor-based operation, was the state’s first mine death in two years.
Fortescue said on Tuesday that it had the full cooperation of contractor Crushing Services International (CSI), and its parent company Mineral Resources Limited, to ensure the safe and hazard-free operation of the ore processing facilities.
The ASX-listed miner said that it would implement a brief ramp-down at both the ore processing facilities during the transition of management. All CSI employees would be retained as employees of CSI, but would work under the management and supervision of Fortescue.
It added that while there would be a short-term disruption at the Christmas Creek operation, Fotescue did not expect full-year production targets to be affected.
Mining began at Christmas Creek in May 2009 with major expansion projects undertaken over the next two years to increase its capacity. During the Christmas Creek expansion, two ore processing facilities were constructed and commissioned, in April 2011 and September 2012. The processing facilities have a combined throughput capacity of more than 50-million tons a year.
