Fortescue appoints new board members
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has appointed its first female board member, announcing on Friday that Elizabeth Gaines would join the board as a nonexecutive director.
The company has also appointed its director of development Peter Meurs as an executive director to the board.
Gaines is COO and CFO and an executive director of The Jetset Travelworld Group. She was also previously the CFO of the Stella group, chief finance and operations director of Entertainment Rights and CEO of Heytesbury.
Chairperson Andrew Forrest said on Friday that Gaines was an “outstanding” addition to the Fortescue board.
“Fortescue will soon be a very large company. Already its annual royalties and taxes, balance sheet provisions to rehabilitate the beautiful environments in which it works, and its commitment to indigenous business, will each go over a billion dollars,” Forrest said.
He noted that Gaines added extensive international experience to the board, in all aspects of financial and commercial management.
Meanwhile, Forrest also expressed his delight at Meurs agreeing to become a member of the board.
“Meurs has an intimate understanding of Fortescue’s opportunities and challenges, combined with a proven ability to take this knowledge and create immense value for the company and its shareholders,” Forrest said.
Meurs’ current responsibilities in the company span from exploration through studies and project development, to delivery of major capital expansion projects, including the delivery of the current 155-million-ton-a-year expansion.
