The annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is South Africa’s only existing science fair for learners and offers companies the opportunity to support learners becoming involved in science and engineering from an early age.

This Expo offers a platform for learners to demonstrate their innovation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and Fluor is delighted to continue being part of this event.

“Fluor selected Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education as an important area of investment, as we are committed to support the development of young South Africans,” said Sifiso Pitso, Manager of Engineering, Fluor South Africa.

This year, about 100 000 learners from schools in 35 regions around the country, submitted their science projects at the regional Expos, demonstrating their research, design, entrepreneurship, innovation and inventiveness. Five hundred learners eventually participated in the national finals. The judging criteria was based on the learners’ creative ability, scientific research, presentation and reporting skills. In addition, the effort put into their project, as well as the quality of their findings, were taken into consideration.

Learners competed for Gold, silver and bronze medals. Special awards also recognised exceptional projects and selected learners were offered the opportunity to participate in international science fairs.

“Fluor handed over three cash prizes to deserving learners in the Innovation, Engineering and Environmental Studies categories,” added Pitso. The recipients were Daniel Alderton, a Grade 8 learner from Fish Hoek High School in Western Cape (Recycled low-cost hearing aid), Amahle Zuma, a Grade 10 learner from Empangeni High School in KwaZulu-Natal (Making waterproof soil and plastic bricks), Onkabetse Olifant and Sammy Phake, both Grade 11 learners from Z.M Seatlholo Secondary in North-West (Leaking tap alert and water conservation system).

“Fluor strategically chose STEM as an area of investment in view of the shortage of engineers nationally and globally, and believes that the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists will encourage learners to follow a career in Engineering that will increase the pipeline of engineers in the future,” concluded Pitso.
