Worldwide information technology (IT) consulting and outsourcing company Wipro has completed the recruitment of the first batch of students for its internship programme in South Africa, which will provide the students with an opportunity to work on actual IT projects.

Wipro is focused on the localisation of its workforce and is extending the company’s worldwide expertise in IT services to South Africans. The company selected the first batch of 30 business science, IT, computer science and mathematics graduate students from leading South African universities to train under this programme.

The interns started their training in October last year and will complete it at the end of this month. They received their training at Wipro’s training centre, in Johannesburg. The comprehensive engagement programme entailed a curriculum designed to address IT-industry-relevant skills sets, specifically in advanced technologies.

The programme recorded a zero dropout rate, with the highly motivated students scoring above 75% in all the assessments. A team of trainers from Wipro’s talent pool conducted the training, which covered technical and behavioural aspects of IT skills. The interns have been deployed at various projects of Wipro in South Africa.

Wipro continues to explore emerging markets to target growth opportunities and recognises that enhancing the employability of engineering and science graduates is a priority for industry and government.

“The programme is a mix of classroom and practical training and allows students to capitalise on Wipro’s expertise and record in training and development,” says Wipro Technologies business director Africa region Shailendra Singh.
