Final placement and assembly of gigantic wind turbine equipment at the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre
This article has been supplied.
The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre will be nearing its completion this Wednesday when three large components of the 2.5MW wind turbine – donated by German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex – will be lifted into position on the new Turbine Hall floor slab of the centre, which is on the Sacks Circle boundary of CPUT’s Bellville campus.
The centre is a collaboration between higher education institutions in the Western Cape and will be a national facility that will train wind turbine service technicians and solar photovoltaic technicians. It will be the first facility of its kind in Africa. The centre received funding from the Department of Higher Education and Training to the tune of R105 million for the construction of the facility which will have its first intake of students next year. The project is also supported by the German development agency GIZ, the South African National Energy Development Institute and Green Cape.
The 49 ton Nacelle will be lifted onto the floor slab, followed by the 45 ton Drive train, which will be lifted into the Nacelle and assembled (with 16 x φ48mm bolts and 24 x φ38mm bolts). The 26 ton Hub will be lifted, turned, and placed in position in front of the Nacelle‐Drive train assembly. The floor of the Turbine Hall has been designed to bear the combined 120 ton mass of this equipment, and piles were strategically constructed under the floor at the planned specific location of the equipment. When commissioned, power and control cables will be connected from the Nacelle, through the Drive train to the Hub, and all systems of the 2.5MW wind turbine will be operational.
This will allow systems training on a full size wind turbine – a first in Africa. The equipment arrived at the Cape Town harbour on 23 June 2014.Please let us know if you would like to come on site, so that we can arrange a hard‐hat, safety disclaimer and induction forms from Steffanuti Stocks.
