Fiat South Africa (SA) says its first micro-mobility vehicle, the Tris, is scheduled to land in South Africa and selected sub-Saharan African markets at the end of the year.

Fiat is a Stellantis group brand.

The 100% electric three-wheeler pick-up will target the fast-growing last-mile delivery market.

Fiat says the Tris offers a 90-km range (with regenerative braking), lightweight design, low running costs, while it can also carry more than 500 kg of payload.

At 3.17 m in length, combined with a 3.05-m turning radius, the Tris should be able to navigate narrow city streets with ease.

The vehicle is also simple to drive, with no clutch or gearbox.

Recharging happens through a built-in 220 V plug, eliminating the need for an external charger.

Fiat says the Tris can be charged from 0% to 80% in 3.5 hours, while a 100% charge will take 4 hours and 40 minutes, using a standard domestic plug.

The Tris is powered by a 48 V electric motor delivering 9 kW (peak power) and a maximum torque of 45 Nm, with the vehicle able to reach a top speed of 45 km/h.

Inside, the driver has access to a USB-C port and a 12 V socket.

Fiat SA believes that the Tris will be a game-changer for business-to-business micromobility in the domestic market, providing independent workers, small businesses and underserved communities with a cost-effective, zero-emissions tool to move their goods.

No price tag has been disclosed yet.

“The micromobility category is far bigger than any one format,” says Stellantis SA micromobility director Kabelo Rabotho.

“At its simplest, micromobility is about matching the journey to the most efficient tool for that journey.

“Not every trip needs a large car. Not every delivery needs a van.

“We are not replacing other forms of transport, rather we are filling a gap that, in the context of Africa, is becoming increasingly apparent as the continent grows.”
