Exxaro commits R1.5m for food gardens at three community institutions
Although the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections has eased in South Africa, JSE-listed diversified miner Exxaro Resources continues to assist communities surrounding its operations to overcome the socioeconomic impacts brought about by the pandemic.
The company has a partnership with international charity organisation World Vision South Africa, to bring healthy food and hygiene packs to vulnerable families.
Exxaro has further committed to donate R1.5-million towards creating sustainable food sources for two schools and a children’s home in Mpumalanga, which will comprise of food gardens to serve as a source of healthy meals for children and their families.
“We remain committed to investing in our local communities. These projects will make life a little easier for those in need for longer-term sustainability. The donations will go directly to families who need it most, with the assistance of World Vision,” says Exxaro community development manager Tebogo Leepile.
She explains that the donation speaks to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, as well as promote sustainable agriculture.
World Vision South Africa says the donation will go a long way to helping some of the most vulnerable members of society.
The beneficiaries are Bonani Primary School, in Bethal, and the Bonginhlanhla Primary School and Cosmos Children’s Haven, in Kriel.
