State-owned power utility Eskom has handed loadshedding operations in Ekurhuleni back to the municipality, after having revoked its authority to manage loadshedding earlier this week.

Ekurhuleni has committed to implement loadshedding as per the appropriate code of practice, assuring Eskom that it has put controls in place to address the challenges that prevented it from adhering to this code of practice before.

The metro was not implementing loadshedding on its customers as it should have for some time, following which Eskom took over the implementation of loadshedding in Ekurhuleni.

Eskom says it will continue monitoring the matter and ensure that Ekurhuleni implements loadshedding on residences and businesses accordingly, since failure to adhere to loadshedding affects the integrity and stability of the national grid, which may lead to higher stages of loadshedding.
