Name and Location
Erongo coal-fired power station project, Namibia.

Client
Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower).

Project Description
NamPower proposes to construct a coal-fired power station, with an initial capacity of 150 MW to 300 MW at site, about 10 km east of Arandis. There could possibly be an upgrade to 800 MW.

The power station will include the facilities to generate electricity, as well as the associated infrastructure to bring coal to the power station and transmit the power generated to the national grid.

Imported coal will be brought by rail from the Port of Walvis Bay along the existing TransNamib rail line, and offloaded at a shunting yard to be constructed as part of the site.

In addition, the plant will include a circulating fluidised-bed boiler, a steam turbine and a direct dry cooling system. A water pipeline will need to be constructed from the Rössing reservoir to the site of the proposed power station to supply water.

The camp to accommodate the workers during the construction of the power station will be located in Arandis.

Value
Not stated.

Duration
Construction is proposed to start in early 2013, with an expected construction period of between 28 and 33 months. Operation of the plant is scheduled for the second half of 2015 and the design allows for 25 to 30 years of operation. It is not known when or if an upgrade to 800 MW will take place at this stage.

The project could be fast-tracked for commercial operation in 2016.

Latest Developments
The environmental-impact study has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment.

The outcome of the prequalification of potential engineering, procurement and construction contractors for the boiler, turbine, generator and balance of the plant have been published. The outcome of the prequalification for the civil works, earth works and rail siding works is expected soon.

Detailed techno-economic and geotechnical studies have also been concluded.
