PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) on Thursday confirmed that work to dismantle and remove a defunct leach tank at its Northern Territory-based Ranger mine had been completed.

In early December last year, ERA reported that a mixture of slurry moved outside the bunded containment area of the processing plant following the failure of a leach tank. The miner moved to clear the spill and subsequently reported that water monitoring points had reported normal readings.

The company said that it had removed the leach tank without incident, and that the failed tank sections had been preserved and stored on site for inspection.

Meanwhile, ERA said that it has also completed its investigation into the leach tank failure.

The remaining six leach tanks on site have been emptied and thorough inspections were currently under way. ERA said that these inspections have identified metal fatigue in the baffle supporters of a single tank, prompting the uranium miner to redesign and replace the baffle supports in all the leach tanks.

The company also assessed more than 8 800 individual assets, and a number of recommendations were made by an independent expert, including critical actions before the restart of operations.

All the recommendations have been accepted.

However, the restart of plant activities at the Ranger operation remained subject to board approval, as well as approval from the Minister of Industry and the Department of Mines and Energy, in the Northern Territory.
