ERA 2012 FY output up 40%
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has reported a 40% increase in production for the 2012 full-year, compared with the previous 12 months, as the miner accessed higher-grade ore during the second half of the year.
During 2012, ERA produced some 3 710 t of uranium oxide (U3O8).
ERA noted that U3O8 production during 2011 was also significantly impacted by the suspension of processing operations between January and June of that year.
Production for the three months to December decreased by 1% compared with the September 2012 quarter, but was 19% higher than the previous corresponding period, to reach 1 227 t.
Ore mined during the full 12 months also increased by some 226% over the previous corresponding period, reaching 5.75-million tons at the end of December. During the fourth quarter of the year, tons mined increased by 78% on the previous corresponding period, to reach 1.1-million tons.
During November last year, ERA completed mining in Pit 3, ahead of schedule, following the earlier-than-expected completion of dewatering of the pit in May of that year, coupled with continued strong equipment availability and use.
ERA noted that the earlier-than-expected completion of mining in Pit 3 resulted in material movement for the December quarter being significantly lower than the previous quarter, down some 38%.
During December, ERA started the backfilling of Pit 3, using the existing mining fleet, as part of the company’s rehabilitation programme.
From December, the source of feed for the mill would be stockpiled material, which includes some high-grade ore mined during 2012.
