Engen Namibia sponsors Down Syndrome Association of Namibia

Engen Namibia announced a three-year sponsorship grant of N$300 000 to the Down Syndrome Association of Namibia (DSAN), towards education of children with Down syndrome.
Hon. Dr David Namwandi, Namibian Minister of Education, was the guest of honour at the grant handover ceremony on Friday 26 September at Hotel Thule, Eros.
Dr Namwandi stressed his conviction that the Namibian education system must at all times address the needs of all learners, especially those who are at risk of being marginalised.
“The initiative taken by Engen with this grant to DSAN will surely have a positive impact on the targeted population.”
According to Ms Nangula Hamunyela, MD of Engen Namibia, “children born with Down syndrome deserve equal opportunities and should not be discriminated against simply because they have an extra chromosome”.
“What informed our decision to fund the Down Syndrome Association of Namibia, among other things, is the Sector Policy On Inclusive Education, which recognises that there are special children who face barriers in learning. Education being the core of Engen Namibia’s Corporate Social Investment agenda, we are further encouraged by the fact that this policy seeks to ensure that all learners have access to an appropriate education that affords them the opportunity to achieve their potential.”
The N$300 000 grant from Engen Namibia was received by the chairperson of the Down Syndrome Association, Dr Eline van der Linden, and witnessed by several DSAN board members, children and their parents as well as members of the media.
