On Friday, June 6th, Engen Petroleum Mauritius and Linked to Life officially launched a new therapy retreat for cancer patients which is located on-site at the Link to Life premises in Vacoas.

In line with its social commitment to the community, Engen Petroleum has united with Link to Life an organisation whose main activities are free cancer screening, public awareness on the
disease, causes, prevention and progress made in the treatment of cancer. They also offer support and counselling for cancer patients and their families.

Social Commitment
In achieving its Vision of being the Oil Company of Choice, Engen supports several causes that impact the communities in which we work and from where we draw our work force.
The decision to partner with link to life came from the recognition that the disease has had a huge impact on the workplace and the community at large.
Almost each and every person is affected in one way or another by it.  The loss of family and friends as well as ravaging effects on our loved ones was too much for us to ignore.
Link to Life provides vital support to those directly or indirectly affected and Engen is proud to be associated with their mission,” highlights Ms Joan Njoroge, Managing Director of Engen Petroleum (Mauritius) Ltd.

Getting Involved
Link to Life was set up in 2002 by a group of volunteers, mainly female cancer survivors. It began its activities in 2003, at Floreal when it enlisted with the Registrar of Associations and became a member of MACOSS and UICC. The NGO moved to its current offices located in Vocoas in 2006 where it continues to provide its services. Not only do they offer their support at their base but they also travel around
the island to give awareness talks in village councils and to companies as well.

“In 2013 and 2014, we stepped up our activities, which are funded by private individuals and mainly by companies. It is within this context that Engen came on board with the donation of the therapy center,” says Elizabeth Dalais, the 2014 President of the organisation.

“We deeply appreciate and depend on the generosity and contribution of organisations such as Engen that seek to give back to society. Our progress would not be possible without their vibrant support. The centre-inside-a-container concept is a very practical use of resources, which will benefit cancer patients of Link to Life and our staff,” she concludes.
