Engen has stepped up to support Sparrow Foundation School by contributing to an innovative new sensory room that will provide disadvantaged learners with cognitive learning difficulties with the opportunity to access quality education.

The official unveiling of the school’s first sensory room - named the Starry Night Room - took place at Sparrow’s Melville-based campus in Johannesburg this month.

Principal Leona Krishna said Sparrow was extremely grateful to Engen for contributing to such an amazing resource.

“We believe Sparrow’s first sensory room will benefit our learners with behavioural challenges, which are often a barrier to learning,” commented Krishna.

The ‘Starry Night Room’ was carefully curated, including lighting choice as well as specific objects placed to facilitate increased concentration, mental and physical calmness, sensory improvement (including touch), sight and hearing, improved social exchanges and fine gross motor skill development.

“Our mission is to support whole-child development and the sensory room is a wonderful haven for our learners,” added Krishna.

For Engen, disability inclusion is one of the company’s key social investment focus areas, giving them an opportunity to contribute towards inclusive rights in South Africa.

“As a caring and inclusive company with ‘heart’, this aligns with Engen’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which endeavour to ensure a better and more sustainable future for all,” commented Unathi Magida, Engen’s head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement.

Sparrow Schools Educational Trust comprises of a Foundation School for grades 1 to 7 and a Combined Technical Skills School, catering for 14- to 18-year-olds.
