Engen and football partners SuperSport United, along with the PinkDrive organisation held a breast cancer awareness campaign at the Liberty Promenade Mall in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town on Saturday, 27 October 2016.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As early detection is critical to saving lives, free tests and education were conducted on-site.

Men and women from the surrounding community availed themselves for testing and education, showing a real interest in gaining awareness of their status. A total of 164 people tested were completed, of which 22 tests were conducted on men. There were 12 referrals for further consultation by their local doctor.

SuperSport United Ambassador, Thabo September was in attendance to encourage men and women to get tested. Speaking afterwards, September said he recently completed the test at the Engen/SuperSport United PinkDrive at the Sunnypark Mall in Pretoria and that it was the most important two minutes of his life.
“The PinkDrive campaign is very relevant to me. I am honoured to raise awareness for this cause and it is important that I lead from the front,” said September.

“I stayed in Mitchells Plain for almost three years in the early stages of my football career and I am very happy to return in order to assist people in our local communities to get tested early,” he added. Heart 104.9 FM’s IRMA G joined the campaign with a personal message of support and gave of her time to create awareness around the PinkDrive campaign.

IRMA G was on-site at the Liberty Promenade Mall where she encouraged young women to get tested. She said the campaign had personal resonance for her as she has lost a loved one to this dreaded disease. “It’s important for young women to get tested as early as possible, as early detection could save a life and can really make a difference in the lives of young people,” said the radio celebrity. “We must educate people about breast cancer awareness and I am honoured to play a small role in encouraging men and women to get tested,” she added.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SuperSport United wore pink tops during their warm-up routines ahead of their recent game against Ajax Cape Town.

Brad Bergh, Engen’s Group Sponsorship Manager, thanked Supersport United for participating in the initiative. “We are proud of our partnership with Supersport United and their commitment to making a difference within the communities in which Engen operates.

We would also like to thank the PinkDrive organization for doing sterling work in educating the public, conducting tests and raising the awareness as early detection is key to saving lives.“ “Soccer provides us with a platform to give back and assist in building happy, sustainable communities,” added Bergh.
