Project Description
The 810 MW Empire Wind 1 project will power 500 000 New York homes and will be the first offshore wind project to connect into the New York City grid.
In 2022, an agreement was signed to transform the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) into a world-class offshore wind hub.
The SBMT is set to become the US’s largest dedicated port facility for offshore wind. It will serve as the operations and maintenance hub for Empire Wind 1 and will be the site of the project’s onshore substation.
Potential Job Creation
The redevelopment of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and construction of Empire Wind 1 will create more than 1 000 union jobs in the construction phase.
Capital Expenditure
The expected total capital investments, including fees to use the SBMT, are estimated at $5-billion, including the effect of expected future tax credits.
Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to reach its commercial operation date in 2027.
Latest Developments
Equinor’s Empire Wind 1 project has secured a project financing package of more than $3-billion. Financial close was reached at the end of December 2024.
