ELECTRICITY BASHERS

22nd March 2013

Stop coal mining and eventually South Africa will have no electricity. Wildcat strikes have emphasised South Africa’s major dependence on coal mining. The illegal industrial action has raised fears that electricity supply could be seriously disrupted as winter approaches. The work stoppage was about performance bonuses not being paid because workers failed to perform. That could only happen in South Africa. The bout of inflation that the weaker rand sets off may well result in labour unions striking again, this time over the very inflation that they themselves have caused. Again, it could only happen in South Africa.
