Sustainable mining services provider EESTech has appointed South African environmental and wildlife management consultancy EkoInfo to assist with the environmental-impact assessment (EIA) process for the Samancor Ferrochrome slag reclamation project.

Chrome miner Samancor Chrome in April signed a ten-year agreement with EESTech to undertake the reclamation of 12.5-million tons of ferrochrome slag waste at Samancor’s ferrometals processing facility in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga.

EESTech can process up to 600 000 t/y of ferrochrome slag to recover 99% of residual chrome units from the stockpiled slag.

The waste manager has completed preliminary engineering works, process design and site configuration.

EkoInfo will undertake the workings required to attain the necessary approvals for construction of EESTech’s zero-waste and environmentally sustainable reclamation process.

EkoInfo has been facilitating EIAs since 1995.

The reclamation project will significantly reduce or eliminate the environmental liabilities of the mine site and process waste, while optimising the profitable recovery of valuable resources from discard tailings.
