Egis SA makes roads safer for school children in Ekurhuleni
This article has been supplied.
At the start of December 2021, Egis Operation South Africa stepped forward to provide a helping hand and assist children and community members in Ekurhuleni with safe access to schools, work, public transit, and other destinations.
Expanding on its socio-economic development programme, the company demonstrated its commitment to investing in South Africa’s youth by launching the two-phase Sekgutlong Primary School Safety Initiative.
In line with Government’s goal to address pressing challenges in communities, Egis teamed up with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Sekgutlong Primary School, community members of the Katlehong township, and Traffic Barricade. Together, they launched the safety awareness intervention on 29 November 2021 in Ekurhuleni.
Phase One of the initiative entailed awareness training sessions on road safety conducted by the EMPD traffic team. Learners, school safety committee members, and several parents attended the sessions. Mr Laurent Bouchacourt, the CEO of Egis South Africa, also handed over school learner patrol clothing and road traffic control equipment to the school.
Excitingly, Egis has confirmed that Phase Two, which entailed the installation of safety signage, pedestrian crossings, and the construction of speed bumps, has successfully been completed.
To date, clear road markings have been painted onto the roads surrounding the primary school, speed bumps have been elevated, and 30 new road safety signs have been installed, along with the traffic safety equipment donated to the school.
Sekgutlong Primary School’s principal, Mrs. Olga Maja, said, “Thank you very much to Egis for keeping your promises! The project has been completed as I speak, and we are now assured that our learners will be safer as they come in and go out of the school.”
Mr. Bouchacourt concluded, “Although the project has been completed, this is not the end of Egis’ relationship with Sekgutlong Primary School. Instead, this milestone marks one chapter within a longer relationship with the school.”
Egis remains committed to helping South Africa’s economy grow by striving to create enduring benefits for local communities and road users. All parties are excited to see how the future unfolds.
