Egis Operation South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of the French engineering and infrastructure development giant, Egis Group, recently established a presence in South Africa. The company set up a permanent office in Johannesburg during the second half of 2020. Despite its early days in the country, the company has already demonstrated an understanding of the many challenges facing South Africa; chief among these being the erosion of technical skills and lack of access to quality education for the youth. The company has begun rolling out a series of developmental initiatives which include a Bursary programme coupled with a mentorship programme.

The Egis Bursary Programme, which launched in January 2021, is aimed at giving the youth in South Africa access to tertiary education and opportunities for preparation for employability. Five local youth, who are now studying at universities around the country are already beneficiaries of this programme.

“Egis is here for the long term to help build infrastructure and to build lives. We launched this programme because we believe in South Africa and its future. Young people should not be defined by where they come from, but by their capabilities and dreams. We have hope that once qualified, these young people will become responsible citizens and business leaders in the infrastructure sector, who will also meaningfully contribute to the building of their communities.” says Laurent Bouchacourt, CEO of Egis Operation South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

The programme is open to young South Africans with matric and above average performance in Mathematics, Physical Science and English, and who are already enrolled at a South African university or university of technology at the time of applying. Preference is given to students from previously disadvantaged communities. Study fields supported include Engineering (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical) and Project Management. The bursary covers tuition fees for the duration of the studies. In addition to this, a needs assessment is conducted to establish requirement for books, accommodation, and other costs.

19-year-old Lethabo Matabane, one of the five 2021 bursary recipients, who is currently studying towards a BEng Tech in Civil Engineering at the University of Johannesburg says, “I can now further my studies and my dream of becoming a Civil Engineer without worrying about financial problems and debt in the near future. My dream is to establish and run my own Real Estate company one day!”. The opportunity to attain a tertiary bursary is often the only option available for young people to fulfil their dreams of studying and broadening their horizons.

Egis Group is a global leader in road operations, traffic management, transport infrastructure development and mobility services across 4 continents – including Africa. Incorporated in 2020, Egis Operation South Africa is a Level 4 BBBEE company.
