Managing groundwater ingress is recognised as one of the most complex technical challenges in underground mining. Water-bearing fissures, fractured rock formations and unexpected inflows can disrupt operations, compromise safety and delay development schedules.

Cementation Africa asserts that it has developed specialised engineering techniques and methodologies through its experience in underground mining projects across the continent, to address these difficulties.

The company says it delivers engineered water-sealing solutions that stabilise underground environments and allow mining operations to continue safely and efficiently. It assesses the geological conditions surrounding the water-bearing structures and designs sealing strategies that aim to be effective and durable.

These interventions often involve precision drilling to intercept fissures followed by the injection of specialised grouting materials designed to penetrate fractures and create a permanent barrier against water ingress. Depending on the conditions encountered, different types of cementitious or chemical grouts may be used to achieve the desired sealing performance.

The company notes that successful sealing of water fissures not only protects underground infrastructure but also plays a critical role in maintaining production schedules. Uncontrolled water ingress can slow development, damage equipment and create hazardous working conditions. By addressing these challenges quickly and effectively, specialised sealing interventions help mines maintain continuous operations.

As mines continue to operate at greater depths and encounter increasingly complex geological conditions, the management of water ingress will remain an important component of underground mining. Cementation Africa affirms that it will continue to support the sustainability and safety of underground mining projects across Africa through the implementation of its specialist capabilities in water fissure sealing.
