The South African subsidiary of global energy company EDF Renewables has been awarded three wind energy projects in Bid Window 5 (BW 5) of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

EDF Renewables South Africa has been awarded participation in nearly 800 MW of projects in South Africa this year.

The group aims to double its global net renewable energy generation capacity from 28 GW to 60 GW between 2015 and 2030.

The newly awarded projects – Coleskop, San Kraal and Phezukomoya – have installed capacities of 140 MW each and are located in the Umsobomvu local municipality, on the border of the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces.

The three wind farms will help meet the electricity needs of 420 000 people.

EDF Renewables expects the projects to reach financial close in the second quarter of 2022, with commissioning planned for two years thereafter.

As it stands, EDF Renewables South Africa operates four wind farms in South Africa, totalling 144 MW of installed capacity – including the Wesley Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape.

Other awarded projects in the year include a 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant for platinum miner Anglo American Platinum and the 77 MW Umoyilanga Wind Farm, which is part of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
