Eastern Cape to host conference for a greener future
The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA)’s Eastern Cape branch is looking forward to hosting their biennial conference on 10 September 2013 at The Boardwalk Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth. The conference theme is ‘The Green Revolution’ and will focus on how imperative it is to move to a greener future to save our planet. According to the third National Waste Information Baseline Report, 108 million tonnes of waste was generated during 2011. An astounding 98 million tonnes was waste landfilled and only 10% of total waste was recycled.* The IWMSA’s Eastern Cape branch will be hosting the conference in Port Elizabeth where representatives from industries across South Africa, as well as local and district municipalities, will share knowledge on feasible waste management solutions.
“The Green Revolution conference aims to educate, inform and create a platform for dialogue for all sectors on the increasing need to create a sustainable green future. It is a great opportunity for industry players to come together and share ideas and find solutions for the many waste related issues that impact on society and our environment,” comments Dr Suzan Oelofse, President of the IWMSA. A variety of topics will be discussed during the conference such as policies and strategies on green procurement, by-laws, regulations that assist in changing mind-sets; waste minimization and recycling; E-waste; organic waste management; alternative energy; new technologies; hazardous waste and domestic waste management.
