Project Description
The ELIDZ aims to bring economic growth to the Eastern Cape and beyond by offering investors a globally competitive combination of geographical position, infrastructure, services and labour. This is being achieved in the region by attracting foreign and local investment in the fields of automotive, renewable energy, aqua culture, agroprocessing, ICT and electronics, as well as manufacturing.

As tenants, they will build their factories on fully developed sites offering various property services, including access to high-technology telecommunications infrastructure and various municipal utilities.

The ELIDZ has attracted more than R 3.7-billion of investment since it secured its first investor in 2005.

Latest Developments
The renewable-energy sector is competing with the automotive sector in terms of investment value inside the ELIDZ.

ELIDZ spokesperson Ayanda Ramncwana has indicated that there has been remarkable growth in renewable-energy investments over the past five years.

Ramncwana has said that 54% of the ELIDZ’s secured private-sector investment, worth R4 billion, 54% is in the renewable-energy sector – an indication of the growing sector diversity in the zone.

The ELIDZ is progressing well in this sector, with two renewable-energy investors in solar photovoltaic and inverter manufacturing already secured.

The ELIDZ also has a growing pipeline, boasting R2.5-billion worth of renewable-energy investment in the advanced stages. Once activated these investments could potentially create 900 jobs.

“The ELIDZ’s strategy in terms of the renewable-energy sector is two-pronged – the zone is targeting investors both in renewable-energy component manufacturing and assembly, as well as the production and transfer of green power,” Ramncwana has said.

The proposed projects include municipal waste-to-energy, landfill gas, a municipal sewerage works biodigester and a biomass gasification plant.
