PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold developer Luiri Gold has received approval of its environmental-impact assessment (EIA) and the accompanying environmental permit for its proposed Dunrobin openpit mine, in Zambia.

The Zambian Environmental Management Agency awarded the permit following extensive consultation with numerous stakeholders, the company said.

The permit was valid for a three-year period during which time project implementation must take place.

Luiri chairperson Melissa Sturgess pointed out that the EIA approval and the issue of the environmental permit were the last major permit requirements for the project.

“The EIA permit is a significant step towards the start of development at Dunrobin. The company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility programmes and local job creation was a key element of the EIA approval process, and the company looks forward to establishing its initial production capacity to provide the cash flows required to unlock the full potential of its significant mining licence tenement holdings,” she added.

The Dunrobin project would involve the construction of a new mining operation with an estimated mine life of ten years. The project would include an openpit mining operation at the historic Dunrobin mine, and a 150 000 t/y to 200 000 t/y gold processing plant.

The Dunrobin processing plant would be adjacent to the openpit mine, and would produce between 13 000 oz/y and 18 000 oz/y.
