The wind farm will be located in the Al Jouf region of north-west Saudi Arabia.
Project Owner/s
The project is 51%-owned by EDF Renewables and 49%-owned by Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company.
Project Description
The Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm will be Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm and will be the biggest in the Middle East, with an installed capacity of 400 MW. It will generate enough power to supply 70 000 homes.
The average generation from the wind plant is expected to be about 1.4 TWh/y. The project is expected to displace an estimated one-million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
The wind farm will supply electricity according to a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company, a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create 800 jobs in the construction phase and 150 jobs in operation and maintenance.
Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at $500-million.
Planned Start/End Date
The project was announced in January, with commercial operation expected by 2022.
Latest Developments
The project is expected to start shortly, after achieving a new record for the lowest levelised cost of energy for onshore wind power, closing at 1.99c/kWh.
Key Contracts and Suppliers
Vestas (wind turbine technology and engineering, procurement and construction contract); TSK (balance of plant); and CG Holdings (substations and high-voltage solutions).
