DTIC sheds light on aid for agricultural producers, entrepreneurs
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) has shared information about various programmes within its export development, promotion and outward investment branch aimed at opening up markets for young producers and entrepreneurs in the agriculture and agroprocessing sector.
DTIC export promotion and marketing chief director Joseph Senona said during a “Youth in Manufacturing” webinar hosted on June 18 that there was a great need to get more young people participating in the agriculture economy.
The department provides support to business through primary market research and helping them achieve international market readiness.
“We offer mentoring and business coaching, as well as take local entrepreneurs on different trade missions, international exhibitions and pavilions to promote their products and businesses,” Senona explained.
DTIC industrial financing director Donald Mabusela shared information on the various incentive schemes available to support those wishing to participate in various sectors.
He emphasised that the goal of the department was to promote a spectrum of those previously marginalised, with a strong focus on women, young people and those living with disabilities.
Eustace Mashimbye, CEO of localisation campaign Proudly South Africa, which hosted the webinar alongside the DTIC, said agriculture offers many job opportunities specifically for young people, who are under-represented in the sector.
“Encouraging entrepreneurship in agriculture and agroprocessing is one way in which we can grow those job opportunities as companies are established and assisted to grow by programmes of the DTIC.”
