Dormac’s floating dry dock halfway to South Africa
South Africa’s new floating dock has passed the halfway mark as it traverses an 8 000-plus nautical mile passage from Ukraine to arrive at the Port of Durban by the end of June.
The new multimillion-rand Dormac Dock 1 would be anchored at owner and operator marine engineering company Dormac Marine and Engineering’s upgraded 160 m quay.
The floating dock, which was described as Dormac’s largest investment, formed part of the company’s efforts to attract vessels entering the Durban Port for repair work and increase its service capacity beyond 45 dockings a year.
The Southey Holdings division embarked on an extensive revamp of its facilities within the ship repair area of the Durban port to accommodate Dormac Dock 1, with expansive public consultations going back as far as 2014.
The dry dock, which, towed by tug Fairplay 33, left the Pallada Shipyard on April 29, already had a number of bookings, Dormac noted in a statement on Thursday.
Around 80 new jobs would be created, with Dormac expecting indirect jobs to be created through partners, contractors and suppliers.
“We are also proud to announce that Dormac’s award winning artisan training programme is being extended to include dry docking skills and we have already begun recruiting apprentices.
Just the dry docking training will amount to a class of 25 apprentices a year. All in all, the Dormac project fits in perfectly with the intentions of Operation Phakisa,” the company said in a statement.
