JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Thousands of employees who participated in an underground sit-in at Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) Dishaba mine at the weekend would return to work from the Monday night shift after the sit-in came to an end on Sunday night.

About 2 300 employees staged the sit-in at the mine from 05:00 on November 9, demanding that the suspension of an Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union shop steward, who had been suspended pending an enquiry for breaching safety regulations, be lifted.

Amplats management and union leaders were involved in engagements throughout the weekend to resolve the situation, with all employees brought to surface on November 10.

The platinum miner stated that no production had been lost, as the interrupted shift had been a “make safe” shift following a Department of Mineral Resources Section 54 notice served on the mine.

“The company encourages employees to raise concerns through relevant channels available and to refrain from participating in illegal activities. We will not negotiate with employees engaged in illegal activity especially behaviour and activity that endangers the lives of their fellow workers. Strong action will be taken against those who instigate this type of behaviour and activity,” Amplats CEO Chris Griffith said in a statement on Monday.
