Evolving technology has led to rapid changes in battery-powered outdoor equipment says Husqvarna South Africa technical support specialist Armand Locherenberg.

“Battery systems have followed a strong innovation trajectory in recent years, with massive improvements in performance, efficiency and integration,” says Locherenberg, noting that petrol remains an essential power source, especially for heavy-duty work and extended runtime, but that battery-powered tools offer a practical, high-performing option for a wide range of applications.

He notes that battery power is often underestimated, however, and asserts that users often rely on outdated perceptions to inform buying decisions.

Locherenberg outlines five common misperceptions and details how technological advances have advanced battery-powered outdoor tools.

1. Battery tools lack the power needed for day-to-day operations
Today’s battery-powered equipment is engineered to deliver consistent power for routine maintenance work, from trimming to pruning to general clean-up of outdoor spaces. Beyond household use, they also offer the strength and reliability needed for a range of professional applications.

2. Battery tools are more expensive
While the initial outlay may be higher in some cases, total cost of ownership, including energy use, routine servicing, and general maintenance, is lower. As battery technology advances, these costs are also evolving, shifting the focus from shelf price to long-term value

3. Battery tools don’t last as long
With the correct care and appropriate use, a 36 V battery can have a lifespan of two to ten years, depending on battery type, usage patterns and maintenance.

4: Battery tools take too long to charge
Charging time depends on the battery system, charger, and workflow. Usage can be planned around charging cycles and spare batteries or shared battery platforms can also be used to prevent downtime.

5. A separate battery is needed for every tool
Some battery systems, such as the Husqvarna Aspire 18 V range, are designed to allow one battery to power multiple compatible tools across multiple brands, improving convenience and reducing overall cost.

Locherenberg says the key to choosing a new power tool is to balance task demands, performance requirements, and long-term value – whether being used by a tradesperson, landscaper, arborist, tree feller, farmer, or householder.

“Both petrol and battery serve distinct needs, and with advances in engineering across both platforms, users can select the most appropriate power source for the task at hand,” he concludes.
