Following a successful campaign on crowdfunding and launch platform Kickstarter in 2025 that raised over $10.24-million in 45 days, intelligent desktop computer-numerical control (CNC) technology developer Makera’s Z1 machine has begun shipping steadily to crowdfunding backers and is now available to creators globally.

“Makera Z1’s record-breaking Kickstarter performance sent an unmistakable signal: desktop CNC has finally broken out of the niche maker circle and entered the mainstream. The fact that machines have already shipped to 67 countries confirms that demand was never the question, accessibility was,” said Makera product manager Leon Hou.

The Z1 was unveiled at technology and innovation exhibition BEYOND Expo 2026, which took place in May in Macao, China, where it received the BEYOND Best of Innovation Award for combining entry-level accessibility with professional-grade performance.

Alongside the Z1, Makera exhibited other desktop CNC solutions, including its Carvera EDU Edition and Carvera Air, offering visitors a comprehensive look at its expanding desktop manufacturing ecosystem.

Following the expo, the Z1 was made available for pre-order on the company’s official website last month.

Industrial-Grade Precision
Makera developed the Z1 after observing that traditional CNC machines “are powerful but intimidating” as they are difficult to operate, costly to own and require significant space.

The company’s engineering team aimed to address these challenges through a machine that bridges the gap between industrial- grade performance and accessible desktop manufacturing.

Aligned with this, the Makera Z1 desktop CNC lowers the barrier to entry for emerging manufacturers while empowering creativity through accessible and intelligent manufacturing technology, aligned with a broader industry shift toward AI-enabled hardware.

Built with a one-piece cast frame, the machine provides “exceptional” rigidity and delivers precision of up to 0.02 mm, enabling users to produce highly detailed and accurate results across a range of applications.

Despite its compact footprint, the Makera Z1 is “engineered for versatility” and is capable of processing more than 500 materials, ranging from wood and plastics to carbon fibre and metals, while also supporting optional four-axis machining for more complex and advanced projects.

To streamline workflow efficiency, the machine features a quick tool-changing system, automatic tool setting and auto-levelling functions, “reducing manual setup time and lowering the learning curve for beginners and experienced users. This, in turn, makes professional machining more approachable for newcomers while accelerating workflows for seasoned users,” Makera notes.

AI-Powered Simplicity
“What truly sets Z1 apart isn’t just what it can cut, it’s how it removes the friction from the cutting process,” says Makera.

The integrated AeroDust collection system maintains a clean workspace without requiring external air sources.

The system’s high-pressure blower delivers concentrated airflow through a dual-channel duct design, effectively removing chips and fine particles during operation while a bottom dust outlet captures residual debris, ensuring consistent precision, protecting internal components and enabling uninterrupted performance.

Additionally, the built-in camera enables remote monitoring and time-lapse recording, allowing end-users to track their project’s progress from anywhere.

Meanwhile, Makera’s proprietary tool Makera Studio removes the complexity of traditional G-code workflows while its AI Craft function allows users to generate complete three-dimensional relief models from simple text prompts or uploaded images, without requiring computer-aided-design experience.

“Combined with one-click automatic toolpath generation, users can move from design to production more intuitively and efficiently,” says Makera.

The Z1 is further supported by Makera’s creator community Makerables which offers a curated library of ready-to-run project files, positioning the machine as part of a broader ecosystem designed to “keep creators producing”.

“With Makera Z1, we aim to make professional-grade CNC capabilities more accessible to creators, engineers, educators and innovators worldwide, empowering more people to turn ideas into reality,” says Makera CEO Josh Zhang.

As demand grows for rapid prototyping, small-batch production and decentralised manufacturing, desktop CNC systems such as the Makera Z1 are becoming essential tools for innovation, says the company.

Looking ahead, Makera plans to continue expanding its product ecosystem, enhancing its software capabilities and supporting a growing global community of makers and professionals.
