The deadline for the new Bloodhound and Sports Science Chevening Scholarships has been extended until March 14, the British High Commission in Pretoria has indicated.

British High Commissioner Dame Nicola Brewer would make the announcement next week.

The one-year Bloodhound Scholarship targets South African engineering graduates who want to pursue their engineering education in the UK to Master of Science-level and be involved with the Bloodhound supersonic car (SSC) project.

The successful candidates would be based at the University of the West of England, a launch sponsor organisation of the scholarship, where the Bloodhound team was also located and would offer mentorship.

Students would be expected to continue their engineering careers in South Africa and assist in promoting science and engineering careers to school learners.

The Bloodhound team is working to break the current land speed record of 1 227 km/h on Hakskeen Pan, in the Northern Cape, and would first aim for a ‘modest’ improvement at 1 300 km/h in 2013, with the ultimate goal of 1 600 km/h to be attempted in 2014.

Meanwhile, the one-year Sports Science Scholarship would offer a South African national a postgraduate course in Sports Science at a specialist university in the UK, starting September.

Kelly Holmes, who is a British double Olympic gold medallist and South African Sport Science expert Dr Sherylle Calder would mentor the successful applicant.
