Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa on Thursday published a notice to the paper and packaging, the electrical and electronic equipment and the lighting industries to prepare and submit waste management plans for approval under the National Environmental Management Waste Act.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is looking to implement three prioritised industry waste management plans aimed at diverting recyclable waste from landfill sites.

A 2011 study by the department revealed that almost 108-million tons of waste was generated each year, with 97-million tons disposed to landfill. Only 10% of the generated waste in South Africa was recycled in that year.

“The waste recycling economy is an exciting approach that will not only eliminate threats to environmental quality and its integrity, but also positively contribute to the growth and development of South Africa’s economy, [as the] industry has significant potential to . . . create much-needed jobs,” Molewa stated.
