Datsun gives glimpse of first model, SA launch in 2014
Datsun on Monday revealed sketches providing a preview of the first new-generation Datsun model, set to be unveiled in India on July 15.
The car, aimed at the Indian market, would be the first of the future Datsun model line-up to be launched from 2014 onwards.
The premiere event would not only unveil the new model, but also reintroduce the Datsun brand, whose return to market had been announced by parent company Nissan in March 2012.
The reinvented brand would be aimed at the middle class in high-growth markets such as India, Indonesia and Russia.
Datsun would also be launched in South Africa in 2014.
Although all Datsun models would be individually developed for different markets, the concept was set to follow a common inspiration, noted Nissan in a statement.
“All future Datsun models will offer up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets an engaging driving experience, peace-of-mind ownership, and accessibility at the right and transparent price with a competitive total cost of ownership. These product values will be supported by Nissan Motor Company’s experience as a global car manufacturer.”
Datsun head Vincent Cobee added that Datsun cars “would be locally developed with the support of Nissan Motor Company engineers and stylists, and would be locally produced”.
This said, however, Nissan South Africa (SA) spokesperson Veralda Schmidt noted on Monday that the Datsuns destined for South Africa would be produced in India.
“No plans for local production have been announced yet.”
Nissan SA assembled pickups and passenger cars at its plant in Rosslyn, just outside Pretoria.
