DA turns to Sars, Sarb in Ramaphosa farm theft
Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen will write to South African Revenue Service (Sars) Commissioner Edward Kieswetter and to the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) for clarity into former spy boss Arthur Fraser’s claims against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Fraser has laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa for allegedly contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act for failing to report a theft from his farm in Limpopo, in 2020.
Fraser alleges that $4-million was stolen and that the thieves were caught and kidnapped, interrogated and paid to stay silent about the ordeal.
The former spy boss further alleges that he has evidence to back up his claims.
The Presidency did confirm that $4-million from the sale of game was stolen from Ramaphosa’s farm, however, it denied any criminal wrongdoing on the part of the President.
The DA says Ramaphosa’s response to the criminal charges raises more questions than it answers.
The party is asking Sars to confirm whether the amount in question was declared and whether it carries tax implications.
It also wants clarification from the Sarb as to whether this sum of foreign currency forms part of illicit flow of funds and potential money laundering on the part of the President.
Steenhuisen attributed the allegation against the President to factionalism in the African National Congress (ANC), as well as infighting and intra-party battles.
“The conclusion that each and every South African must now reach, is that the only hope of restoring stability to the South African State, and ensuring the future of our nation, is to vote the ANC out of office. We cannot allow the toxic infighting of the ANC to demolish the project of a free, democratic, and prosperous South Africa,” he said.
He said the DA would serve its duty to ensure that the President was not above the law.
