CU BECOMES COUP?

The militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has staged something of an economic coup de’ tat in practically paralysing the mining industry and government into inaction. The three big platinum companies report that AMCU is showing no interest in negotiation and is a union in name rather than function. But its Achilles heel is its alleged failure to ensure that its members adhere to the picket rules. The R600-million Anglo American Platinum lawsuit against AMCU may be the tip of the iceberg. Sibanye Gold is offering a big reward for information on a fire at one of its mines and other companies are waiting to pounce at the slightest AMCU transgression, which could reduce AMCOUP back to AMCU in no time at all.
