For five months now employees from Optimum,Koornfontein, Woestaleen, Boschmans, Klipbank, Setemba and Sandile mine have not received a salary and they are in need of food.

In December a group of women, all previously employed by the coal mines in the region, decided to take action and do something about the situation the miners are facing. They set up the NPO, Feed the Miner" and approached local businesses if they would be able to donate food items to the cause. Six weeks later the organization was handing out food and grocery hampers to 650 families.

When the formally Gupta mines were placed under business rescue in February 2018, the employees of these mines lived from month to month, not knowing whether they will get paid or not. In October 2018 the employees did not receive their salaries. Also, no contributions were made to their medical aid and pensions any further. Many of these miners had to borrow money from friends and family members just to try and stay alive. No Christmas presents for their children. No books and uniforms in January this year.

While the business rescue process continues, miners have no option but to try and survive.  The Colliery Training College in Emalahleni answered the plea and decided to get involved. The college collected donations from the students and staff over a period. The food was handed over to the project in March to assist with the food shortage. A bakkie load of food made its way to the families in need.

“This project is very close to our hearts,” Johan Venter explained. “The reason is that as the Colliery Training College, some way or another, most coal mining employees had some form of contact with CTC. And therefore, they are part of our family,” he concludes.
