CSIR signs 49M pledge
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Thursday joined the 49M energy saving campaign.
“Reducing energy use is always high on the CSIR’s agenda. The CSIR has, since 2006, set itself stretched yearly targets. These targets have been met and exceeded annually,” CSIR group manager for properties infrastructure and services Richard Flame said at the signing of the pledge.
He added that the meeting of these targets was achieved after a number of energy efficiency initiatives, including installing energy efficient lighting, had been introduced.
The CSIR had also, depending on the area and need for hot water, switched off geysers or adjusted them to 55 °C.
“Behavioural change has contributed to a reduction in energy use. We encourage our employees to switch off the lights in the boardrooms, toilets and other areas when the rooms are empty.
“Last year, the CSIR installed real-time energy meters and monitors at all sites and buildings to assist in the monitoring of energy use and demand. Building occupants will also be able to see in real-time how much energy they use in the building. This information will assist them in managing electricity use more efficiently,” Flame stated.
49M spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said he was pleased that more companies were prepared to come on board and ensure the energy saving campaign achieved its mandate of achieving at least 10% energy saving by 2015.
“We are pleased that CSIR has come on board as we increase our efforts to persuade companies and individuals to do more to save electricity,” he stated.
