The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to the local automotive industry.

The MoU provides a framework for joint programmes and co-development initiatives with the intent to bolster the global competitiveness of the auto sector.

The organisations seek to collaborate on a number of areas, including the growth and development of small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs).

"By supporting the growth of SMMEs and driving innovation, we aim to create a thriving industry ecosystem and contribute to economic growth," says acting CSIR group executive Sipho Mbhokota.

The CSIR and AIDC will also collaborate on sector studies related to new energy vehicles (NEVs).

The partners will explore the conversion and retrofitting of current internal combustion engines to NEVs, including public transport vehicles.

They will also investigate potential collaborations in electric scooter/three-wheeler applications.

The partners will also look at the establishment of a public NEV charging station at the CSIR, the localisation of charging stations in general, and cross-sector opportunities in battery manufacturing.

Skills development will be another focus of the MoU, particularly in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The partnership is also set to delve into concepts such as plant simulation, modelling and optimisation, as well as equipment localisation and industry support initiatives.

"Our partnership with the CSIR is a crucial step towards driving growth and innovation in the local automotive industry,” says AIDC CEO Andile Afrika.

“By embracing smart factory technologies and focusing on skills development, we will enhance efficiency, productivity and competitiveness.”
